blake's tiger
The chart above is one of the first designs for the book Animal hats to knit. I was trying to work to a brief, and this design was based on Blake's tiger. A pink nose and the ears were separate knitted pieces that were stitched to the hat. This design was rejected, but partly because I didn't knit the stripes in black but dark brown and then if I had to reknit the design, other improvements were suggested. Generally, when designing projects that will appear in print, you are asked to avoid large areas of black or dark shades and stark white. The patterns for both the nose and ears appear in the final book; the nose is part of the Mouse pattern; the ears are part of the final Tiger design. This hat uses knitting and embroidery techniques – intarsia, Fair Isle and Swiss darning.
